Dharwad Tribal Experience
For 3 days my fellows and I stayed in the district of Dharwad in Kadumane Homestay, which is about 515 km from Mysore. While there we were immersed in nature and warmly welcomed & educated by locals on their culture and way of life. The field experience included visiting 2 medicinal gardens, one in Kadumane Homestay and the other at Mr. Sreedhar Desai’s, an Ayurvedic practitioner, home. Along with meeting a local midwife and visiting Sanjeevini Mobile Health clinic.
PHRII Mobile Medical Clinic
For women in rural villages, it is difficult for them to access healthcare and even harder to have a cervical screening as a preventative measure for cervical cancer. Therefore, PHRII tries to bridge this gap by setting up a mobile medical clinic in the surrounding villages of Mysore to provide free cervical screening for about 20 women. Preparation for the mobile clinic begins early as they have to determine if the demographics of the women in the villages is appropriate for such screening. If so, PHRII will set up their clinic, which not only includes the screening but also counseling and education on cervical cancer and the screening process. My fellows and I were able to help the ladies of PHRII set up in the village of Sagarkatte on May 23rd.

JSS Ayurveda Hospital & Medical College
JSS Ayurveda Hospital is a facility that provides authentic Ayurvedic treatments, with both in-patient and out-patient services. Being that Ayurveda is an indigenous system of medicine in India, visiting it was a great opportunity to compare how the services provided here differ from other allopathic hospitals my fellows and I visited such as Apollo & JSS State hospital. Dr. Noor Fathima, assistant professor at JSS Ayurveda Medical College, lead our tour of both facilities.
